Audi Unveiled Electric Car E-Tron against Tesla

Audi has unveiled the company's first all-electric series production vehicle. The Audi e-tron will start at €79,900 and is scheduled for delivery in Europe by the end of 2018.

The E-Tron was revealed at an event on the San Francisco waterfront. Hundreds of drones formed Audi's four ring logo over a former Ford factory turned event space.

The SUV was unveiled here because the E-Tron was designed with the US market especially on mind, Audi executives said.
The e-tron will seat five, have two motors, and feature an all-wheel-drive configuration in its standard trim, according to Audi. The automaker has said it will have a range of around 248 miles, based on the European testing cycle, though it has not yet been tested by the US Environment Protection Agency.

The e-tron measures 4,902 mm long, 2,192 mm wide and 1,664 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,929 mm and laden ground clearance of 175 mm. The SUV also gets a boot space of 807 litres, which increases to 1,614 litres with the second row folded.

The car gets roof rails and side windows with an aluminium surround. The Audi e-tron comes with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard while 21-inch designs are optional. At the back, it gets LED taillights with a horizontal bar running across the width of the car. It also gets a dual tone rear bumper.

On the inside, it gets a 4-spoke steering wheel and triple displays for driver MID, infotainment screen and climate control module. The e-tron comes equipped with a thumb-activated drive selector. The car can also be configured with a Bang & Olufsen 16 speaker system.

The vehicle will contain Amazon's Alexa, which will allow drivers and passengers to get the news, order groceries, stream music and audiobooks, and access some smart home features through voice control, Audi says.

The Audi e-tron is powered by dual motors that send power to all the four wheels. The front motor put out 168 BHP and 247 Nm while the rear is good for 188 BHP and 314 Nm.

The combined rated power of the system is 355 BHP and 561 Nm of torque. In the S mode, with the accelerator pressed down, the motors boost the output to 402 BHP and 664 Nm for 8 seconds. The claimed 0-100 km/h time is 5.7 seconds while top speed is limited to 200 km/h.

The e-tron will arrive in the second quarter of 2019 for US customers.
