Messi is now just six goals behind his country's record goalscorer Gabriel Batistuta, but the Barcelona superstar says the important thing is that Argentina secured a win that leaves them third in the CONMEBOL section, two points adrift of Uruguay and Ecuador after six matches.

"I'm happy with goal number 50 but more because we won and this helps to keep growing," he told  after the final whistle.
The Barcelona superstar's goalscoring exploits make him only the second player in Argentine history to reach a half century of goals.

It means that the Barcelona man has now scored 499 goals for club and country.

He will have the chance to notch a 500th career goal when Barca face big rivals Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Saturday night.
